Not since the emerald hues of Wicked has a show looked more glorious in Chicago’s Nederlander Theatre than Moulin Rouge! The Musical. That’s partly because the visual excess of Moulin Rouge, taking its cue from its sourcing of the famously outré Baz Luhrmann musical, matches the gestalt of the palace formerly known as the Oriental Theatre. But it’s also due to the expansiveness of the new touring production, which has packed its trunk with all the toys from Broadway, including the stuff that sits far beyond the proscenium, the windmill, elephant and all. That’s very rare these days but the producers clearly realized the difficulties of creating truly immersive theater in massive road houses.

Are you ready to can-can? The cast for the upcoming North American touring production of Moulin Rouge! The Musical has been announced. The musical is set to begin performances at Chicago’s James M. Nederlander Theatre on March 19. Directed by Tony winner Alex Timbers, the production features Tony-winning choreography by Sonya Tayeh. “I’m thrilled and honored to welcome an extraordinary and vibrant group of actors to Moulin Rouge! The Musical as we begin our rehearsal process this week,” said Timbers. “After years of anticipation, we are all so excited to finally be taking this show on the road to audiences throughout North America.”

The first North American tour of Moulin Rouge! The Musical will open in Chicago with a Chicago-area actor in the lead role of Satine, according to an announcement Wednesday from downtown theater presenter Broadway in Chicago. The musical, which recently won multiple Tonys in its Broadway production, will launch the tour next February at the Nederlander Theatre in the Loop, starring Conor Ryan as Christian and Elgin native Courtney Reed as Satine.
